Mobile Money transactions surge 64.7% to hit GH¢649.2 billion

Recent data from the Bank of Ghana shows that the value of mobile money transactions in Ghana increased to GH¢649.2 billion in the first two months of 2025, reflecting a 64.7% year-on-year increase.

The surge highlights the resilience of the digital payments sector despite recent regulatory changes.

In January 2025, mobile money transactions reached GH¢333 billion, before moderating to GH¢316.2 billion in February.

This compares with GH¢394.2 billion recorded in the first two months of 2024.

The expansion comes despite the presence of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), which was abolished last week by the new administration.

Analysts expect the removal of the levy to further accelerate mobile money adoption, reinforcing the growth of the country’s financial technology ecosystem.

The total number of registered mobile money accounts now stands at 74.1 million, up from 66.9 million a year earlier.

However, while the number of registered agents is estimated at 896,000, only 411,000 remain actively engaged in facilitating transactions.

Ghana’s mobile money sector has exhibited robust growth, with transaction values in 2024 reaching a record GH¢3.02 trillion, a 57.9% increase from the previous year.
