The Member of Parliament of Asokwa and Deputy Majority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, affectionately referred to Haruna Iddrisu as her “beloved son” during his vetting on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Expressing her support for Iddrisu’s nomination as Minister-designate of Education, she emphasised her belief in his abilities.

“It will be most unfortunate if I don’t add my voice, my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. So, I just didn’t want to keep quiet but to bless him. I know your competencies and I know when people were questioning why education, I knew what you could do. So, I bless you,” she said.

Haruna Iddrisu’s career began in 2004 when he contested the newly-formed Tamale South Constituency at the time and won.

Throughout his career, he served as the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications and was the Minority Spokesman on Communications in the 4th Parliament, when his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was in opposition.

Despite his party’s defeat in the 2016 presidential elections, Iddrisu was re-elected and assumed leadership as Minority Leader in the 7th Parliament.

Iddrisu continued his political success, winning his Tamale South seat again in the 2020 parliamentary election with a landslide victory, despite the NDC’s loss in the presidential race.

His political influence further solidified in May 2023 when he became the first incumbent MP in Ghana’s history to run unopposed for four consecutive terms.
