he Ghana Police Service has denied claims that a man in uniform captured on video kicking a young man in the head, is a policeman.
The police said the man in question is a “civilian, a guard of the Swedru Municipal Assembly”.
A press release signed by ASP Simon Tanku on behalf of the Director-General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, on Friday, 22 March 2019, said the matter is being investigated by the Swedru Divisional Police Command.
In the video, which has gone viral on social media, the uniformed man was seen mercilessly kicking the young man in the head from behind. The unarmed victim was kneeling down and being questioned by a group of men when the uniformed man came from behind and dealt a heavy kick to the side of the victim’s head. The kick sent the victim tumbling, and was helped back on his knees by another uniformed man who was at the scene.
According to the police, preliminary investigations show that the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, 21 March 2019 at Agona Swedru in the Central Region. The police account said that the victim had been arrested by the City Guards for an alleged offence.
“However, when the attention of a police officer on duty nearby was drawn to the offence, the officer went to the rescue of the victim and filed a report at the Agona Swedru Police Station,” the statement added.
