Mahama Mocks Akufo-Addo Over Stalled National Cathedral Project

President John Dramani Mahama recently took a good-natured yet pointed swipe at former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo concerning the highly criticized National Cathedral project, which remains unfinished. Speaking at the Ringway Assemblies of God Church on Sunday, June 15, 2025, during a Father’s Day service, President Mahama concluded his sermon with a humorous comment about the stalled construction that drew laughter from the congregation.
As he wrapped up his message and offered a prayer for the church’s growth, President Mahama playfully remarked, “May our church continue to grow bountifully and be that huge master tree that we all want it to be. May our church not be the National Cathedral hole… You didn’t see that one coming.” He then reiterated, “May our church not be the National Cathedral hole. Let it grow and grow and grow,” which sent ripples of laughter through the audience.
The National Cathedral project, envisioned as a magnificent structure to serve various purposes and boost Ghana’s tourism, now stands as little more than a large, abandoned excavation site. This is despite an estimated $58 million already committed in funding. The project, initiated under Akufo-Addo’s administration, has become a significant point of contention due to persistent delays, a lack of transparency, and its incomplete status, famously symbolized by the “cathedral hole.” Its stalled progress has even garnered international attention, with a feature in The New York Times.
