Lionel Messi Makes MLS History With Second Consecutive Golden Boot Award

Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi has made history in Major League Soccer (MLS) after becoming the first player to win the league’s Golden Boot award in consecutive seasons.

The Inter Miami captain achieved the milestone after finishing the 2026 regular season with 26 goals in 31 appearances, further strengthening his reputation as one of the most influential players in the competition.

Messi’s latest achievement follows an outstanding 2025 campaign, during which he scored 29 goals to claim the Golden Boot for the first time. By retaining the award in 2026, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has set a new benchmark in the history of the American top-flight league.

His 26 goals placed him ahead of several leading attackers in the competition. FC Dallas forward Petar Musa finished second on the scoring chart with 22 goals, while Nashville SC striker Sam Surridge occupied third position with 21 goals.

Beyond his goal-scoring numbers, Messi also made a significant contribution to Inter Miami’s attacking performance through his creativity and ability to provide opportunities for teammates. He finished the regular season with 17 assists, taking his total goal contributions to 43.

The Argentine’s influence was also evident in Inter Miami’s final regular-season fixture against Charlotte FC on Saturday, November 7, 2026. The match ended in a 3–3 draw, with Messi failing to find the back of the net but providing assists for his team’s first two goals.

Although he did not score in the encounter, his involvement in the goals demonstrated his continued importance to the team as they prepared for the MLS playoffs.

Inter Miami finished second in the Eastern Conference standings, a position that secured home-field advantage for the opening two rounds of the postseason. The result gives the club an opportunity to build on its regular-season performance as it pursues further success.

Messi’s consecutive Golden Boot victories are particularly significant because no player had previously managed to win the MLS award in successive seasons. His achievement places him in a special category among the league’s most successful individual performers.

He has also become the sixth player in MLS history to win the Golden Boot more than once, underlining the consistency he has maintained since joining Inter Miami.

The 2026 campaign has provided another opportunity for Messi to demonstrate his ability to influence matches through both goals and assists. Despite being in the later stages of his professional career, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward continues to produce impressive performances and compete with younger players in the league.

His success has also helped maintain Inter Miami’s position among the leading teams in MLS, with supporters continuing to look to him for inspiration during important fixtures.

Having already secured the Golden Boot for a second consecutive season, Messi will now turn his attention to the playoffs, where Inter Miami will seek to translate its regular-season performances into another major achievement.

His latest record adds another milestone to an already remarkable career and further strengthens his legacy as one of football’s greatest players.
