Fabewoso: Contractor locks up new classroom; pupils study in rickety structure [video]

A newly constructed six-unit classroom block for Kpobikorpe M/A basic school in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra region has been locked for the past year while pupils battle for classrooms to learn.

Although the new classroom block has since 2016 been ready for occupation, the pupils have been denied access to the facility by the contractor, and have to use a rickety makeshift structure as alternative.

Adom TV’s Kodwo Mensah Aboroampa who visited the school gathered that, government owes the contractor hence the decision to lock the building.

It emerged that, the contractor self-financed the entire project but has not been paid for the past two years.

The school Management Committee Secretary, Johnson Semagor in an interview said the situation has forced school authorities to merge two classes in the primary section.

He said over 120 pupils are forced to use a small classroom, a situation he said is affecting teaching and learning the school.

Efforts at getting the contractor to hand over the keys to the block to the school authorities for use have failed as he is demanding for payment before the building is handed over.

Also, organizer of the school Parent-Teacher Association, Prosper Tenge has threatened to break the lockers of the block to allow the pupils access to the classrooms to learn.

He noted that, efforts to get the Municipal Assembly to intervene have not yielded results.

Mr. Tenge pleaded with government to urgently come to the aid of the school.
