Kotoko fan in critical condition after gunshot wound

A supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko is battling for his life after he was allegedly hit by a stray ‘rubber’ bullet from Police personnel deployed to ensure security at the Baba Yara Sports stadium earlier today.

Kotoko were facing Berekum Chelsea in Match Day three of the Ghana Premier League this afternoon, and as is customary, police and other security personnel were deployed to the stadium to ensure the safety of life and property.

However, the game took an unfortunate turn when Kotoko supporters allegedly threw projectiles on the field during their shock 1-0 defeat to Berekum Chelsea, halting the Premier League match for several minutes on Sunday.

Angry supporters of the Porcupine Warriors were furious over decisions of the referee in their match against the visiting team which led to some throwing stones and sachet water directed at the match officials.

Some also tried to force a gate to the pitch open before security officials intervened to halt the action which could have spiraled out of control in the match.

Calm appeared to have been restored and the game continued until the end.
However, outside the stadium after the game, the disturbances continued.

A footage sighted by GhanaWeb has a man, clad in a Kotoko replica jersey, in a pool of blood with onlookers shouting that he (the victim) had been shot by a police officer.

The man was then seen being carried into an ambulance and conveyed to a nearby hospital.

GhanaWeb cannot independently confirm what occasioned the shooting or what resulted in the wound but we will update you as and when we get information.
