What is also not uncommon is the increased reportage of theft and burglary in peoples’ homes, in these challenged times. More than ever home security is an issue that we need to pay attention to.
There is more to security than simply locking your doors and shutting your windows. Here are a few hacks to give you that peace of mind while you chase that money.
Good Neighbourliness
What has good neighbourliness got to do with it? Well, everything. Did you know that there are people who can be your first line of defense against a home invasion in your area? Yes, those are your neighbours.
They know the area and can help keep an eye on your home when you’re away but they can’t do that if they don’t know you.
So, make an effort to meet your neighbors and form good relationships so you’ll have people to rely on. If something fishy is happening in your area or around your home, a good neighbour will call and let you know.
Light Up Your House
Statistics show that most home invasions occur during the day, likely when you are at work. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need to secure your home at night. While bars and good neighbours can help safeguard your homes during the day, all bets are off at night when visibility is poor.
If you cannot afford a sophisticated security system, don’t stress yourself. Just place lights around your front and back yard. If possible, use lights that come equipped with motion sensors for added protection.
Eliminate Hiding Places
Are you the type who likes shrubs growing around your house? Well, I’ve got news for you. While shrubs may give your house curb appeal, they also provide burglars with a handy place to hide. So trim down trees and plants close to your home that could be used for cover and opt for smaller flowers instead. Remember not to cut down trees completely, just keep them well trimmed enough such that they will not to provide a hiding place for burglars.
Put Up Security Signs
Did you know that many security providers also include gate signs to help deter potential burglars? If you have them, put them up. That will help scare off burglars. Sometimes the belief that there’s a security system inside can be as effective as actually having one.
Have a Backup Plan
While it’s great to put in place the above measures, you would have to also develop a backup plan in case these measures fail. Together with your family members, come up with a simple routine to help secure your home. Define clearly, rules for admitting strangers into your compound and also rehearse or do a mock burglary response, so your kids know what to do should a break-in occur and design an exit strategy as well.
