“God chose Akufo-Addo; NDC, NPP must pray for him” – Kwabena Donkor
Nana Akufo-Addo won the 2016 presidential election because God chose him, opposition lawmaker Dr Kwabena Donkor has said.
Preaching at the Pentecost International Worship Centre, Kokomlemle in Accra on Saturday, 20 April 2019, the Pru East MP said God has enjoined Christians to pray for their leaders and anybody in a position of authority, therefore, as Christians, whether the President of Ghana is a member of their political party or not, they have a responsibility to pray for him.
The former Minister of Power said: “I want us to look at 1 Timothy 2: 1 to 3. Apostle alluded to that earlier; that we should pray for kings and pray for people in authority”.
“The Church has a responsibility if we believe that prayer is powerful. We as Christians, as people of faith, believe that the spiritual rules the physical. If this is our worldview, and this country is not developing, then we’re not doing something right”, Dr Donkor admonished.
Using himself as an example, he told the congregation that: “Look, I am an NDC MP. Last Sunday, just the immediate-past Sunday, the President of the Republic was visiting my constituency. I left Accra after the first service on Sunday to go there and to welcome him”.
“He is my president”, Dr Donkor said, explaining: “I might not have voted for him. In fact, I did not vote for him. He was not the one I wanted to be president, but I am a believer”.
“I believe that God enthrones and dethrones, and if God has chosen him at this time as my president, I have a responsibility, as a believer, to accord him all the respect necessary, and this is the mindset I want Christians to have”, he noted.
“Do we pray for our leaders?” Dr Donkor asked.
He said leadership was a tough call, thus, the need for followers to constantly pray for their leaders.
“Look”, Dr Donkor exclaimed, “One thing I can tell you [about] is that leadership is lonely”.
“You can be surrounded by hundreds of advisers and I can tell you for free that the advisers confuse you. They are giving you contradictory advice on the same subject matter, so, the advice is useless. You’re lonely and that is where you need prayer, the supplication of the state to guide you.
“We have a responsibility to pray for our president, our legislators, the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, our area head, the district pastor, the local presiding elder, everybody in leadership … Don’t say I am NPP and, so, if there’s an NDC president, I won’t pray for him or her; or, I am NDC and if there’s an NPP president, I won’t pray for him.
“Look, the president, as far as human comfort is concerned, is very comfortable, you are not, so, you are praying for the president for God to give him the wisdom to change your material status, so, when you pray for leaders, you are praying for your own wellbeing, we have to understand this”, Dr Donkor said.
