Ghana’s Shatta Bandle finds trouble with EFCC for spraying naira at an event

Ghanaian social media personality Firdaus Iddrisu, widely known as Shatta Bandle, has found trouble for himself after a video of him spraying naira notes in Lagos emerged.

In a now-viral video, Shatta Bandle was seen publicly spraying naira notes on June 28 during Mr. Ibu’s funeral when he was in Nigeria.

Nigeria has tight laws that forbid the misuse of the naira notes, and in light of these strong regulations, Shatta Bandle’s act has drawn attention.

Recall that popular crossdresser Bobrisky was detained by the EFCC after he was seen spraying naira notes during a movie premiere. The EFCC accused him of abusing and mutilating banknotes, which later resulted in him being sentenced to prison for six months.

Socialite Cubana Chief Priest also landed himself in trouble after he was spotted mutilating the naira notes. He was later given a N1 million in bail and had his case adjourned.

Following this, Shatta Bandle has apologized to Nigerians and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his behaviour and made it clear that he had no intention of breaking the law.

He claimed that as the dollars he was spraying ran out, he switched to naira, which is what caused the infraction.

Referring to Nigeria as his second home, Shatta Bandle said that he respects both Nigerian laws and the EFCC.

He said: “I apologise to you people; I didn’t come to break laws because Nigeria is my next home. I apologise to everybody, especially the EFCC, for what I have done.”

According to the Naira Mutilation Law, anyone found guilty of misusing naira notes or tampering with coins or notes would face a minimum six-month jail sentence, a fine of at least N50,000 (about US$37), or both punishment and incarceration.
