Ghana to experience scarcity of bush meat – Fire Service

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says the country is likely to experience scarcity of bush meat very soon.

This is basically due to the rapid extinction of wild animals in the country, the Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADOI), Kwame Adomako, the Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani.

As the dry season sets in, ADOI Adomako called for a concerted approach to protect wild animals, saying, “we don’t hunt for bush meat in the dry seasons”.

He reminded that the nationwide ban on group hunting in the season was still in force and appealed to everybody to contribute towards the enforcement of the ban.

ADOI Adomako indicated that the PNDCL 229 prescribed punishment, and warned bush hunters, saying culprits would be prosecuted.

“We don’t go hunting expeditions in the dry season because that is the period the animals also breed,” he stated.

ADOI said from all indications, the harmattan would be severe in this season, and advised farmers, palm wine tappers and smokers to desist from carrying naked fires into the bush.

The harmattan mostly occurs between the end of November and the middle of March and is characterised by dry and dusty north-east trade winds.

ADOI said the GNFS would deploy taskforce and fire volunteers into the local communities to check and stem fire outbreaks and warned fire setters would be prosecuted under law 229.
