Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known on social media as “Ghana Jollof,” has reacted after the Ghana Police Service declared her wanted in connection with an investigation into alleged online activities.
The development has attracted considerable attention following a wanted-person notice issued by the Police identifying Kodua as a person they are seeking in connection with an alleged case of inciting violence.
According to the Police, Kodua is believed to be in the United Kingdom. The Service has appealed to members of the public with information about her whereabouts to assist with the investigation and her identification.
Kodua has since responded to the wanted notice and the allegations levelled against her, giving her account of the situation.
The controversy centres on content published through the “Ghana Jollof” social media account. Police say their investigations have identified Kodua as the person operating the account and allege that some of the material published contained statements capable of causing fear, alarm or violence.
At a press briefing, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, cited a video in which Kodua allegedly claimed that there had been a near coup at the Jubilee House. Police have described such claims as part of the material under investigation.
The Police have also linked the investigation to Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a 40-year-old senior nursing officer from the Techiman area.
Bafoh has been accused of assisting in the dissemination of videos associated with the “Ghana Jollof” account. Police allege that she recruited other individuals to redistribute the material across various social media platforms.
Investigators have also alleged that financial transactions were connected to the activities under investigation. Police say forensic examination of Bafoh’s phone, including mobile money records and digital files, forms part of the evidence being examined.
Bafoh has pleaded not guilty to a charge of abetment of crime relating to the alleged publication and circulation of false news. She was remanded into custody and is expected to return to court on September 30, 2026. Her lawyers have subsequently filed a bail application at the High Court.
The case has also generated discussion about the limits of online expression and the circumstances under which social media publications can result in criminal investigations.
Legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called for a distinction between content that is merely offensive or unpleasant and speech that amounts to a criminal offence. He said authorities should clearly identify the specific material they consider to have crossed the line into criminal conduct.
The Police, meanwhile, say their investigation is continuing and that other people allegedly involved in producing, circulating or financially supporting the material could be identified.
Kodua remains outside Ghana according to the Police’s account, while the investigation into the “Ghana Jollof” account continues.
The allegations against Kodua, Bafoh and any other persons linked to the case remain subject to due process and have not been established by a court.
