A 35-year-old German amateur footballer has been arrested in connection with the suspected poisoning death of his teammate, in a case that has shocked their football club and the local community.
The suspect, identified as Marius, was arrested on September 1 over the death of 30-year-old Philipp, who reportedly became seriously ill during an end-of-season trip to Dresden with members of amateur club TuS Rockenberg.
Philipp reportedly fell ill during the team trip and his condition worsened after he returned home. His family contacted emergency services and he was taken to hospital, where he later died.
An investigation into his death initially considered the possibility of severe food poisoning because the team had eaten fish during the trip. However, subsequent forensic examinations reportedly established that Philipp had suffered septic multi-organ failure resulting from poisoning.
Investigators later turned their attention to Marius, a teammate who was subsequently arrested and placed in pre-trial detention.
Senior public prosecutor Thomas Hauburger reportedly said investigators believed the incident may have been an act of revenge. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed exactly what motivated the alleged poisoning or how it was carried out.
Reports circulating in the Rockenberg area have suggested that the two players may have previously been involved in a disagreement concerning a woman. However, this remains an allegation and has not been officially established as the motive for the suspected killing.
Marius has reportedly not made a statement on the allegations and has not been convicted of any offence. The investigation remains ongoing.
The development has left members of TuS Rockenberg shocked, particularly because the club had already been dealing with the loss of Philipp following his death in 2025.
The club previously remembered Philipp as a friend and committed player, while expressing its shock following the arrest of his teammate. Club officials have asked that players, coaches and management not be approached for comments while the investigation continues.
The case has also attracted attention because the suspect was reportedly arrested about two weeks before a planned larger wedding celebration. Reports indicate that he had already completed a civil marriage ceremony.
For now, authorities are continuing their investigation as they seek to establish what happened during the team trip and determine the circumstances surrounding Philipp’s death.
