An old photograph of National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as “General Mosquito,” has resurfaced, offering a reminder of his long political journey and his involvement in Ghana’s political transition to the Fourth Republic.
The photograph reportedly captures Asiedu Nketiah campaigning for Parliament in 1992, a period that marked an important stage in Ghana’s return to constitutional democratic rule.
His political journey, however, had begun several years earlier. In 1989, Asiedu Nketiah was elected to represent Seikwa at the Wenchi District Assembly, giving him an early opportunity to serve his community at the local government level.
As Ghana prepared to return to constitutional rule, he became a member of the Consultative Assembly, the body responsible for contributing to the preparation of the draft 1992 Constitution.
His participation in the Consultative Assembly placed him among individuals involved in the constitutional process that paved the way for the establishment of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. Asiedu Nketiah has previously spoken about the work of the assembly and the importance of some of the provisions contained in the 1992 Constitution.
Following the adoption of the Constitution, Asiedu Nketiah contested the Wenchi West parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NDC during the December 1992 elections. He won the election and became a member of the First Parliament of the Fourth Republic, which was inaugurated in January 1993.
His victory marked the beginning of a 12-year stint in Parliament. He successfully retained the Wenchi West seat in subsequent elections before leaving Parliament in 2004.
During his parliamentary career, Asiedu Nketiah served on a number of important committees, including the Appointments Committee, Finance Committee and Public Accounts Committee. He also chaired the Mines and Energy Committee and became involved in parliamentary discussions on agriculture, food and cocoa affairs.
His political responsibilities later extended into government. Between 1997 and 2001, he served as Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture in charge of Crops.
After leaving Parliament, Asiedu Nketiah continued to rise through the ranks of the NDC. In December 2005, he was elected General Secretary of the party, beginning a tenure that would make him one of the longest-serving occupants of the position.
He subsequently secured re-election as General Secretary and remained a prominent figure in the party’s national leadership for many years.
In 2022, Asiedu Nketiah took another major step in his political career when he was elected National Chairman of the NDC, succeeding Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
The resurfacing of the 1992 campaign photograph has therefore drawn attention to a political career spanning more than three decades. From his early days as an assembly member and his participation in the Consultative Assembly to Parliament, government and senior leadership of the NDC, Asiedu Nketiah has remained a significant figure in Ghanaian politics.
The photograph serves as a visual reminder of the early years of his political career and how far he has travelled since campaigning for parliamentary office during Ghana’s transition into the Fourth Republic.
