GBC boils as staff go red to fight privatisation move
The Staff Union of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Monday, 8 July 2019 started protesting the sale of some GBC channels to some private investors.
The union has hoisted red flags and tied red cloths on some trees of the state broadcaster as tension simmers on the premises of the state broadcaster.
The union is alleging that the management of GBC is planning on selling GTV Govern, a channel dedicated to the three arms of government, to businessman Mr Joseph Siaw Agyapong.
To add to that the union says the management is further planning to sell GTV Sports Plus to Chinese-owned Star Times and Obonu TV, a dedicated channel to the Ga community, to private businessman Mr Daniel McKorley, the founder and chief executive officer of McDan Group of Companies.
The union is wondering what will become of the staff if the channels are sold to those private individuals.
ClassFMonline.com gathers that the union will be petitioning the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communication today and also petition the National Media Commission (NMC) on the matter.
