E-Levy is a disaster – Tsatsu Tsikata

Legal practitioner Tsatsu Tsikata has described the Electronic Levy (E-Levy) introduced and implemented by the ruling New Patriotic Party government as a disaster.

According to him, the E-Levy has fallen short of expectations, to the point where even Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia appears to be distancing himself from the policy, despite it being implemented during his tenure as vice president.

Tsatsu Tsikata made this known during an interview on GH One on Monday, November 11, 2024.

“E-Levy is passed and what has come of it? The E-Levy is a disaster that even the candidate of the governing party for the next presidential elections wants to stay far away from the E-Levy. According to what I’m reading, he says it will be abolished,” he said.

The legal luminary’s comment on the E-Levy came up while addressing the role played by the Supreme Court in the Assin North case involving Gyakye Quayson’s dual citizenship and the ongoing vacant seats case.

He stated that certain court decisions affect the image of the judiciary, undermining its credibility and effectiveness.

He noted that decisions made by the courts that are not in compliance with the provisions and principles enshrined in the Constitution imply a lack of respect for the Constitution itself.

Referencing the Assin North case, Tsatsu Tsikata pointed out how the Supreme Court was used by some individuals in the passage of the E-Levy.

“The Supreme Court’s earlier interim interlocutory injunction that they gave was clearly related to attempts to pass the E-Levy because with Gyakye Quayson in Parliament and government having difficulty in getting the numbers to pass the levy… so an injunction is obtained against him in the Supreme Court, making him unable to vote in parliament for the E-Levy’s passage,” he said.
