A woman has recounted how a TikTok video promising financial assistance allegedly led her from Accra to a location near Wenchi in the Bono Region, where she became suspicious of the people she had contacted over the offer.
According to her account, she had been experiencing financial difficulties when she came across a social media video promoting an opportunity to receive a substantial amount of money from people claiming to be Freemasons. Hoping the offer would help improve her financial situation, she reportedly contacted the phone number provided in the video.
The woman said the person who answered promised that she could receive startup capital for a business after joining the group. She was allegedly told that the organisation’s elders would provide the money and that members were expected to purchase a costume for meetings held every four months.
The offer reportedly persuaded her to travel from Accra to Wenchi, which the person on the phone had described as the group’s headquarters.
Upon reaching the area, the woman said a driver arrived to pick her up and transported her away from the main road towards an isolated, bushy location. The unfamiliar surroundings reportedly raised concerns about her safety.
She recounted that she became increasingly uncomfortable with the journey and informed the driver that her children could track her location because she had not told them about her trip. Her decision to mention the possibility of being traced appeared to reflect her growing unease about the circumstances.
The woman further alleged that she eventually met the man with whom she had spoken over the phone. During their encounter, she was reportedly told that she would have to provide certain items before the promised financial assistance could be released.
These items allegedly included a red candle, sand collected from her residence in Accra and three handkerchiefs. The unusual demands reportedly deepened her suspicions about the offer and the intentions of the people involved.
Her account has raised concerns about the use of social media platforms to attract people with promises of quick financial rewards. Individuals experiencing economic hardship may be particularly vulnerable to offers that appear to provide an easy route to business capital or sudden wealth.
The incident also highlights the importance of verifying claims made by people or groups encountered online before travelling to unfamiliar places. Offers that require applicants to make unexpected journeys, provide unusual items or comply with unexplained conditions should be approached with caution.
Although the people involved reportedly presented the opportunity as a Freemason-related initiative, the available account does not independently establish that the organisation was connected to the incident. Freemasonry is an established fraternal organisation, and the alleged conduct should not be attributed to it without supporting evidence.
It also remains unclear whether the woman formally reported the incident to the police, whether an investigation was opened or whether any arrests were made. The allegations therefore require independent verification before conclusions can be drawn about the identities or intentions of those involved.
The account serves as a reminder for social media users to exercise caution when confronted with offers of financial assistance that appear too good to be true, particularly when the conditions attached to them are unclear.
