Farmer loses thousands of yams to fire

A raging fire has swept through a yam barn at KpareKpare, a farming community in the Krachi East Municipality, leaving a local farmer counting his losses.

The blaze, which occurred on Saturday, January 11, 2025, destroyed thousands of yams, delivering a significant blow to the farmer’s livelihood.

Information obtained by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that, the fire started in the early hours of the Saturday and quickly spread throughout the barn, fueled by the dry harmattan conditions.

Kwasi Anase Mensah, the farmer, who was at home when the fire broke out, was visibly shaken by the sudden incident.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but Isaac Kwaku Kaliwa the Assembly member, and the authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the community rallied around Mensah, to offer him support to rebuild his barn.

“I’m still trying to come to terms with what happened, those yams were my livelihood, and now they are all gone,” Mensah said.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by local farmers and the importance of taking precautions to prevent such disasters.
