Ernest Yaw Kumi’s family breaks silence on his death

The family of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi, says his sudden passing has left them devastated.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, relatives from his hometown of Wenchi in the Eastern Region described his death as a major blow—not just to them, but to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the entire nation.

His younger brother, Edmond Kumi, revealed that their mother collapsed upon hearing the news and had to be rushed to the hospital.

“It was too much for her. She couldn’t handle the shock,” he said tearfully.

The MP’s uncle, Edward Ntiamoah, described him as a man full of love, compassion, and dedication to the wellbeing of others.

“He was a pillar of support to the entire family and touched many lives. We’ll always remember him for his warmth and selflessness,” Mr. Ntiamoah said.

Despite their sorrow, the family says they take comfort in the positive impact he made during his lifetime.

Plans for his funeral are currently on hold, as the family awaits the return of his wife and other relatives from Accra before finalising arrangements.

On Tuesday morning, their family home in Wenchi was filled with mourners. The air was heavy with grief as cries and wails echoed through the compound.

Mr. Ernest Yaw Kumi died on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 40 years old.

He was in his first term as MP for Akwatia and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mavis Kumi, and three children.
