Electoral Commission to Pay Temporary Staff by June 20th After Seven-Month Delay

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a definitive timeline for the payment of allowances to temporary staff who worked during the 2024 general elections. In a significant development that brings relief to hundreds of individuals, the EC has committed to disbursing all outstanding payments by Friday, June 20, 2025. This long-awaited announcement comes after a protracted seven-month delay, which had led to growing frustration and public outcry among the affected personnel.

The assurance was officially communicated in a letter addressed to the temporary staff on June 12, signed by the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa. The letter acknowledged the delay and provided a clear commitment regarding the upcoming payments. “I bring you greetings from the Electoral Commission and trust that this letter finds you well. We are pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Finance has today, Thursday, June 12, 2025, released funds for the payment of temporary staff,” stated Jean Mensa in the correspondence.

The EC’s announcement follows a period of intense pressure and public complaints from the unpaid staff. Earlier reports on June 12 highlighted mounting frustrations, with many individuals expressing their grievances through various public platforms, including live radio broadcasts. These expressions of discontent underscored the urgent need for the EC to address the outstanding payments.

Confirming the positive development, the Commission stated that it has now successfully received the necessary funds from the Ministry of Finance, which will facilitate the full payment of the allowances. Chairperson Jean Mensa assured the temporary staff that the EC is “working around the clock to ensure that payments are made promptly.” She reiterated that the staff should “expect to receive their allowances on or before Friday, June 20, 2025.”

This expected disbursement aims to provide much-needed financial relief to the affected individuals and finally bring closure to the prolonged waiting period. The EC, through its Chairperson, also extended its gratitude to the temporary staff for their remarkable patience and continued cooperation throughout this challenging period. The letter concluded by reaffirming the EC’s commitment to ensuring that all payments are processed efficiently and without further delay.
