EC sets December 27 for referendum on new regions

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set December 27, 2018, for the referendum on the creation of six new regions.

Before this, the Commission will embark on a series of activities including the registration of new and continuous voters, the exhibition of the voters’ register, as well as processes for the transfer of votes and or the grant of proxy votes.

This was the outcome of the today’s Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with the Electoral Commission. The political parties present at the meeting were impressed with the outcome.

The National Chairman of the People’s Progressive Party, Brew Hammond, was quite happy with the outcome of the meeting.

“I am satisfied, It was a fruitful meeting, it was handled with decorum and we just now need to see the details in the CI that is being put together and then we will offer our suggestion.”

The National Communication Director of the People’s National Convention was also impressed by the meeting, but he registered his concern on the absence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The NDC was not there and visibly so, because no one represented the party, at this meeting and we don’t know why. An offer of apologies for being absent was not submitted to the EC,” he said.

Speaking on the absence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from the meeting, the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia told Citi News the EC did not properly invite party.

“NDC has not been properly invited to an IPAC meeting, and we are very surprised about it, and that I suppose goes to confirm our fears that the reconstituted electoral commission may not leave up to their responsibilities as an impartial elections administration body in Ghana,” he said.

The NDC has vehemently been opposed to the appointment of the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, whom they have accused of bias because of a misunderstanding the party had with her institution, the Institute of Economic Affairs, prior to the presidential debate before the 2016 elections which the NDC boycotted.
