Parliament empty as NPP primaries nears

The impending parliamentary primaries of the governing New Patriotic Party, NPP has compelled Parliament to truncate its sitting for today and set aside that of tomorrow Friday, June, 19.

This follows a near-empty chamber owing to some majority MPs fighting for their seats in various constituencies.

Wa West MP Joseph Yileh Chireh questioned moves by Majority Leader, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu to have the House adjourned and resume tomorrow given the absence of the majority of the lawmakers.

He demanded suspension of sitting till next week Tuesday when the NPP primaries will be over.

Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak supported the demand arguing MPs will only be wasting their time if they turn up tomorrow for work.

Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu agreed but admonished political parties to take a second look at the mode of choosing parliamentary candidates.

According to the Suame MP, the primaries system portends danger for Ghana’s democracy.

Meanwhile, Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye consequently granted request for adjournment till next week Tuesday.
