Ghanaian media personality and entrepreneur Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, has opened up about a difficult experience from 2006 that she says once left her emotionally devastated.
In a reflective post shared on social media, Delay revealed that she had planned to leave Ghana during the period when Germany was hosting the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
At the time, she was working in radio and described herself as being professionally successful, but said her heart was set on leaving the country in search of what she believed would be better opportunities abroad.
Delay said she went to the German embassy with plans to obtain a visa, travel on a one-way ticket and potentially not return to Ghana.
However, her plans came to an abrupt end when her visa application was rejected.
The rejection was particularly painful because she had already made arrangements with a former classmate who had promised to provide her with a place to stay if she succeeded in travelling.
According to Delay, she tried repeatedly to contact the classmate after the visa refusal, but her calls went unanswered. She said the lack of response from someone she had expected to support her made the experience even more difficult.
Looking back at the situation nearly two decades later, Delay said she now understands the rejection differently.
Rather than seeing the visa refusal as a denial of her dreams, she believes it redirected her towards a different path that ultimately helped shape the person she became.
She explained that what felt like a painful “no” at the time may have been part of a bigger plan for her life. Her reflection centred on the idea that people can sometimes become so focused on reaching a particular destination that they fail to recognise the opportunities available on the path they are already travelling.
Delay’s message was also framed around her Christian faith. She encouraged people who may currently be experiencing disappointment to continue believing and trusting God even when circumstances do not go according to their plans.
Her story has resonated with social media users, with several people responding to her post by sharing their own experiences of rejection, disappointment and unexpected changes in direction.
For Delay, the failed attempt to relocate to Germany did not bring her journey to an end. Instead, she now regards the experience as one of the moments that redirected her towards opportunities she might not have encountered had her original plan succeeded.
The broadcaster’s reflection also carries a broader message for young people who may feel pressured to leave Ghana in search of better opportunities.
While international travel can open doors, Delay’s experience suggests that a setback does not necessarily mean that a person’s ambitions have failed. Sometimes, an unexpected obstacle can lead to a completely different path.
Her message is therefore one of patience, faith and resilience. What may appear to be rejection at one point in life can, with time, become an experience that people look back on with a different understanding.
Delay’s account has once again given her followers a glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of her journey before she became one of Ghana’s recognised media personalities and entrepreneurs.
