Dawhenya demo: I’ve done much but we can’t fix roads in two weeks – DCE
The District Chief Executive for Ningo Prampram in the Greater Accra Region, Jonathan Paa Nii Doku says the ultimatum given by residents for their roads to be fixed at Dawhenya is untenable.
The residents on Friday protested and gave government 14 days to fix the road from Dawhenya to Afienya or face their wrath.
They burnt tyres and blocked the road with a container as part of their demonstration.
Mr. Doku disclosed that he has already moved for the road challenges to be addressed but the two weeks deadline given by the residents won’t solve the problem.
“In reality, one thing is empirical, you can’t fix that road in two weeks. Practically, that is not even possible. It is not as if I am sitting down and I am not doing anything about the situation,” he said on Eyewitness News.
“It is not the responsibility of the Assembly to fix that major road. The road belongs to the Ministry of Roads and the agency that is in charge is the Ghana Highway Authority and Urban Roads. As a DCE what I can do is bring the attention of the Ministry to the deplorable nature of the road, which I have done. I have followed up with a number of letters as well”, he added.
Residents have said, the poor nature of the stretch is taking a toll on their health and collapsing many businesses.
They decried the neglect and broken promises successive governments and legislators had made to them over the past few decades.
Member of Parliament for the area Samuel Nartey George backed the protests and blamed the government for the delay in fixing the road.
He further threatened to join his constituents to demonstrate again if their concerns are not addressed.
