Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa constituency, Mr K.T. Hammond, has justified why Ghanaian Members of Parliament (MPs) must be appreciated.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen show, Monday, the lawmaker, whose comment on a new proposed chamber sparked controversy in parliament, said MPs face many challenges to the extent of physically working for their constituents.

“In my own constituency, my constituents asked me to chase a snake in a toilet and kill it. Just imagine, a whole me, being asked to kill a snake because they voted for me. How could I have done that? This is the kind of things we face.

“I told them I can’t and so the only thing I can do is to give them money to buy a gun and kill it themselves. And so I visited there again and asked what they did and they said, they managed to kill it, I gave them money for a good work done,” he said.

He said unlike other constituents who refuse to rely on their MPs, his constituency has seen major developmental works because he believes the power of the people should not be underestimated.

According to him, such challenges MPs face are the main reasons he is justifying the construction of a new chamber.

He, therefore, urged Ghanaians to rather appreciate the struggles of the MPs and not lambast them.

“Sometimes I find it hard to understand why Ghanaians hate MPs. If you don’t agree with us, just speak to the issue and not attack us,” he stated.

The criticisms of Parliament have forced the leadership in Parliament to rescind its decision on the proposed $200 million worth 450-seat chamber.

The Acting Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, Mrs Kate Addo, who disclosed this, said more feasibility studies are needed for the project to proceed in future.
