Chef Smith’s arrest: What we know so far

on

Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith, popularly known as Chef Smith, has been detained by the Ghana Police Service. This development came shortly after his announcement of setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking marathon.

Arrest

The arrest occurred just moments before the press conference was set to go live.

According to Benny, Chef Smith’s manager, a group of individuals, including musician Nana Boroo, approached the team with claims of being part of the initial group that supported Chef Smith during his cooking marathon.

“We were getting ready to go live, to have our press conference today at La Palm Royal Beach, and a few minutes into the program, some group of people came to us, and one identified himself as Nana Boroo, the musician.

“Apparently, their issue was that they were part of the old team that, one way or another, supported Chef Smith during the Cook-a-thon.

“So, we had back and forth, and they said they wanted to have a word with him. We said then we should sit at the reception and talk, but later they said they wanted to have the word with him in their car, and I told them that wasn’t the agreement because the agreement was that we were going to sit at the reception area and have a word with him,” he said on Hitz FM.

The situation escalated when Nana Boroo insisted on discussing matters with Chef Smith privately in a car, a request that was not agreed upon by Chef Smith’s management.

Journalist account

A journalist present at the event recounted the scene: “We just heard a few commotions, and suddenly, the management team was pressuring us to leave the room.

“Chef Smith had to leave abruptly, and it was only then that we realized there were police and soldiers present. The whole building was locked down. It turned out that Nana Boroo claimed he was part of Chef Smith’s management team, and his removal constituted a breach of contract, leading to the arrest.

As of now, Chef Smith is being held at the La Police Station in Accra. The exact details of the charges against him remain unclear.

Cook-a-thon

Chef Smith concluded his marathon cooking session on March 6, 2023, after 820 hours of continuous cooking. He announced his achievement during a press conference held at the La Palm Beach Hotel on July 2, 2024.

A banner at the entrance of the conference room declared: “Press Conference. Unveiling the New World Cook-a-Thon Record Holder. Millennium Chef Smith from Ghana with an incredible 802 hours, 25 minutes to dethrone Irish King, Alan Fisher.”

Uncertainty

However, despite his claims, the Guinness World Records official website still lists Alan Fisher as the current record holder, with a time of 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds.
