Change of government shouldn’t give opportunity to misbehave – Asantehene condemns Obuasi incident

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has condemned the recent clash between illegal miners and the military over the AngloGold Ashanti concession in Obuasi, which resulted in the loss of nine lives.

Speaking after being briefed on the incident by managers of AngloGold Ashanti at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene expressed deep concern and disappointment over the situation, stating that the change of government should not be seen as an opportunity for people to misbehave and engage in lawless activities.

“Illegal mining should not be encouraged by anybody, not even the government. And the change in government should not give people the opportunity to misbehave,” the Asantehene said.

“We live in a society where the law works, and therefore, I don’t think this government will let this happen.”

The Asantehene’s comments follow a violent confrontation between the military and a group of illegal miners at the AngloGold Ashanti concession in Obuasi, which resulted in the deaths of nine people and left several others injured.

The Asantehene called on the government to take immediate action to address the issue of illegal mining, which has been a major concern.

He also urged the security agencies to be proactive in maintaining law and order and to ensure that those who engage in lawless activities are brought to justice.
