Cement truck kills man at Inchaban

One person was killed when a trailer loaded with bags of cement overturned after veering off to the pavement at Inchaban, just before the police barrier, in the Shama District of the Western Region on last Thursday.

Initial report was that the victim was a driver’s mate who got trapped under the bags of cement, killing him instantly.

However, it later emerged that he was a pedestrian who was walking on the pavement at the time of the accident.

It took personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police to help remove the lifeless body, to deposit at a hospital morgue.

Chief Supt Isaac Kwasi Sorkpah, the Western Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, said the accident vehicle was a flat body articulated truck.

The truck was loaded with about 1,000 bags of cement.

He said on reaching a spot about 30 metres before the Inchaban police barrier, the driver lost control of the steering wheel and veered off the road onto the pavement, and in the process the vehicle fell on a pedestrian, killing him instantly.

He said the truck was later towed from the place to clear traffic for motorists, and added that the driver is assisting the police in investigation.

“The war on indiscipline among motorists is still there. I will therefore, plead that all hands must be on deck to promote good driver behaviour,” he stressed.

Another Accident

In a related development, a truck loaded with limestone heading towards Shama from Takoradi also crashed into a tree at Agric Junction, near Frank Motors, on Thursday, at about 11:20am.

Eye witnesses indicated that had it not been the tree, the accident would have been very fatal.

The driver dived from the truck to escape death, but sustained minor injuries in the process.
