Benjamin Asare has made a case for local players – Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe

Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare’s impressive debut for the Black Stars has reignited discussions about the quality of local players, with Hearts of Oak board member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe urging greater attention to the domestic league.

Asare, who earned his first call-up to the national team, replaced first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi and kept a clean sheet in Ghana’s 5-0 win over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers last Friday.

His performance, according to Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, proves that locally based players deserve more opportunities.

“It was a good decision using Benjamin Asare because the coach has tried all the other goalkeepers, and Asare demonstrated clearly that he is fit for the job,” he told Graphic Sports.

“He has made a case for local players, but we can never be home and dry in this competition until they are featured prominently.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe highlighted Ghana’s past Africa Cup of Nations victories, which were won with home-based players, and urged the GFA to encourage Coach Otto Addo to expand his scouting efforts beyond Accra and Kumasi to uncover hidden talents across the country.
