Audio: Rockson Bukari’s resignation meaningless – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has described the resignation of Rockson Bukari from his position as a minister of state as meaningless.

According to Mr Gyamfi, the former minister’s resignation, though good, is not sufficient remedy for his alleged conduct of attempting to bribe a journalist.

“Today in Ghana, ordinary people are languishing in jail for stealing yam, cassava, and yet when politicians engage in criminal conducts, they resign and that is the end; that is very bad,” he said on Accra-based Metro TV monitored by Adomonline.com.

The former Upper East Regional Minister was heard on tape allegedly scheming to bribe a journalist to drop a story on a Chinese mining firm, Shaanxi Mining Company.

He had told the journalist who is a Starr FM correspondent in the Upper East region, Edward Adeti, that the publication would affect the relationship between the Chinese managers and the traditional authorities, specifically the Tongorana.

Mr Bukari has since resigned following the leakage of the audio of him attempting to bribe the journalist with the president, Nana Akufo-Addo also accepting his resignation.

But the NDC communicator has posited that a resignation is not enough, suggesting that further action needed to be taken against the former minister.

“I don’t know why Rockson is being given the luxury to resign, he should have been sacked and prosecuted. That is why his continuous stay in the office as office of the president is untenable. He has been caught on tape for God sake” he stressed.
