Adele to Make Film Debut in Tom Ford’s Adaptation of Anne Rice’s Cry to Heaven

Pop superstar Adele is set to swap music for acting, making her film debut in the upcoming adaptation of Anne Rice’s 1982 novel Cry to Heaven, directed by former fashion designer Tom Ford.
The movie will also star Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, and breakout talent Owen Cooper, among others. Additional cast members include Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Hunter Schafer, and Thandiwe Newton. Details about the specific roles of Adele and the other actors have not yet been revealed.
Cry to Heaven is set in the 18th-century world of the “castrati” — male singers who were castrated to preserve their high voices — and follows the intertwined lives of two castrati who rise to fame as opera stars in Venice.
Adele, one of Britain’s most acclaimed music artists, released her last album four years ago and stepped away from the spotlight after concluding her Las Vegas residency. She has described this period as a time to “take a big break” and explore other creative pursuits.
Tom Ford, who will direct, produce, and write the film, has transitioned from fashion to filmmaking. He previously directed the acclaimed films A Single Man (2009), starring Colin Firth and Nicholas Hoult, and Nocturnal Animals (2016), which earned two BAFTA nominations. After selling his fashion house to Estée Lauder for $2.8 billion in 2022, Ford announced plans to devote the next two decades to film-making.
“I loved making the two films that I made. That was the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire life,” Ford told GQ.
With Adele’s highly anticipated entry into acting and Ford’s stylish direction, Cry to Heaven promises to be one of the most talked-about films in the coming years.
