DStv Cuts Subscription Prices in Ghana as New Packages Take Effect in November

MultiChoice Ghana has announced a restructuring of its DStv subscription packages, introducing revised monthly prices aimed at giving subscribers more affordable options based on their budgets and viewing preferences.

The changes, scheduled to take effect on November 5, 2026, will reduce the number of DStv packages available in Ghana from six to four. Under the new arrangement, monthly subscriptions will range from GH¢50 for the entry-level package to GH¢570 for the premium offering.

The revised package structure comes amid sustained public concerns about the cost of pay-TV services in Ghana and calls for television subscriptions to become more accessible to households.

Under the new pricing arrangement, the Starter package will cost GH¢50 per month and offer 90 channels, including selected entertainment and free-to-air content. The Select package, priced at GH¢100, will provide subscribers with 123 channels and a broader selection of entertainment programming.

For viewers primarily interested in sports, the Sports package will cost GH¢250 per month. It is designed to provide access to football coverage, including competitions such as the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

The Ultimate package, priced at GH¢570 monthly, will cater to subscribers seeking premium entertainment and a wider range of sports content.

The restructuring is intended to simplify the available choices and allow customers to select packages that better match their viewing habits and financial circumstances.

MultiChoice Ghana Chief Executive Officer Alex Okyere said the revised packages were designed to provide greater flexibility for subscribers. He also indicated that the new prices represented permanent package adjustments rather than a temporary promotional offer.

The announcement follows public debate over television subscription costs, with some Ghanaian consumers calling for reductions in monthly fees. The issue has also featured in discussions between government representatives and the pay-TV operator over the affordability of legitimate broadcasting services.

Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George has previously expressed the government’s interest in making television services more affordable while addressing piracy and the use of unauthorised streaming devices.

The government has argued that affordable legal alternatives could help encourage consumers to use authorised broadcasting services rather than resorting to illegal access methods.

For subscribers, the impact of the changes will depend on the package they currently use and the content they want to watch. Customers who prioritise basic entertainment may find the lower-priced options more suitable, while sports fans and viewers seeking premium channels may need to consider the higher-priced packages.

The new structure also places renewed attention on the balance between subscription affordability, content availability and the operating costs associated with broadcasting premium sporting events and entertainment.

As the November 5 implementation date approaches, subscribers will be looking for further information about the channels included in each package and how the changes will affect their existing subscriptions.

The revised pricing marks a significant adjustment to DStv’s package offering in Ghana, as the company seeks to respond to consumer concerns while maintaining its position in the country’s pay-TV market.
