Two people have sustained gunshot wounds following a confrontation involving a police officer and drivers of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union at Ritz Junction, near Madina in Accra.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 11, 2026, and is being investigated by the Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command.
According to a police statement, preliminary investigations indicate that General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, who is stationed at the Madina Police Station, was involved in an encounter with some drivers at the taxi rank.
The police said the confrontation escalated after the officer allegedly threatened the drivers with his pistol. The drivers reportedly attempted to disarm him, and during the ensuing struggle, the firearm discharged, injuring two people who were nearby.
The victims were identified as Doe Asinyo and 34-year-old Gifty Nyimahen.
Asinyo sustained a gunshot wound to the left thigh, while Nyimahen suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Both were rushed to the Madina Pentecost Hospital for medical attention.
According to the police, Asinyo received treatment and was subsequently discharged from the hospital. Nyimahen was initially admitted for treatment before being referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical care.
Following the incident, General Sergeant Aboase was arrested and placed in police custody pending further investigations.
The police also retained the officer’s service pistol as evidence to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command has assured the public that the matter is being investigated and that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.
The incident has raised concerns about public safety during confrontations involving law enforcement officers and members of the public, particularly in busy transport areas where bystanders may be exposed to danger.
Investigators are expected to examine the events leading up to the confrontation and the circumstances under which the firearm discharged. The officer’s arrest does not, by itself, determine criminal liability, and the investigation will be required to establish the facts.
The condition of the second victim following her referral to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital was not specified in the available reports.
