Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has stated that the deployment of well trained dogs should serve as a deterrence to terrorists groups to operate within and along Ghana’s borders.

According to him, the threat of terrorism makes it imperative for nations and their security agencies to collaborate in different ways in order to defeat activities of terrorists within and across national borders.

Dominic Nitiwul explained that the Ghana Armed Forces is aware of the current threats and the need for such collaboration hence it is developing the canine programme to be shared by all security agencies both within our country and in the sub region.

“The employment of such dogs both within and along our borders should deny terrorists groups of space needed to operate. These dogs can only be employed after they have been well trained. Dogs are intelligent and can help with detection of any ordinance device and illicit substances in real time. With the construction of this wonderful edifice, I know training of dogs will be more effective.”

Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul was speaking as a special guest of honour at the commissioning of a transit accommodation facility for the purpose of housing troops for the Ghana Military Police Training School and National Dog Academy.

The Minister mentioned that the Military High Command views the programme very important, therefore, he entreated stakeholders to take the programme serious and dedicate their energies towards the realization of the vision.

Nitiwul disclosed that plans are well advanced to upgrade the Academy from a Military Company to the status of a full Training School with its own command structure.

“The military also has in place programs with its development partners develop the capacity of the Academy in order for it to deliver on its core mandate in support of programs aimed at confronting terrorism and illicit trafficking.” He indicated.

He called on Facility managers to make frantic efforts in their maintenance of the facility which he said would increase its lifespan and make it available for all future students
