Three Suspected Robbers Killed, Two Police Officers Injured in Upper East Gunbattle
Three suspected members of a robbery gang have died following a gunfire exchange with police in the Tilly Forest area of Ghana’s Upper East Region.
The incident occurred during a follow-up operation by the Upper East Regional Police Command as investigators sought to recover items allegedly concealed by the suspected robbery group.
According to the Police, some suspects who had earlier been arrested led investigators to a location within Tilly Forest where they indicated that firearms had been hidden.
Upon arrival at the location, the police team reportedly came under gunfire.
Three suspects who were accompanying the team sustained injuries during the incident. They were identified by the Police as 33-year-old Amadu Apiiga, Philip Vokbilla and Bilal Adabode, also known as Sulley.
The three were taken to a hospital for medical attention but were pronounced dead on arrival, according to the Police.
Two police officers were also injured during the operation and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The Police said other individuals who may have sustained injuries during the gunfire fled the area. Authorities are therefore continuing efforts to identify and locate other suspected members of the group.
The operation follows investigations into a suspected robbery gang allegedly linked to attacks on motorbike riders and mobile money vendors in several communities across the Upper East Region.
The areas mentioned by the Police include Benaba, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Zebilla and surrounding communities.
The Police have also linked the suspected gang to the killing of a police officer during a robbery incident at Zebilla on February 8, 2026. The allegation remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Several items were recovered during the operation, including firearms, ammunition, motorbikes and other items that Police believe may be connected to the gang’s activities.
Six other suspected members of the group who were arrested earlier remain in police custody and are assisting investigators with the ongoing inquiry.
The Police are also working to identify other suspected members who remain at large and determine the source of the items recovered during the operations.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has appealed to residents to provide information that could assist investigators, particularly regarding individuals who may have sustained injuries during the incident.
Authorities say information from the public could help in locating other persons connected to the suspected gang and advancing investigations into the robbery cases reported in the affected communities.
The latest operation forms part of efforts by the Police to dismantle suspected robbery networks operating in parts of the Upper East Region.
While three suspects have died and others remain in custody, investigations into the activities of the alleged gang are continuing.
