AfroMedia Hails Ambassador Idris’s Appointment as AU’s Permanent Representative to the UN

Cairo, Egypt – AfroMedia, the prominent Pan-African media and journalism initiative, has extended its warm congratulations to Ambassador Mohamed Idris on his significant appointment as the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the African Mission in New York. This appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for African diplomacy and a testament to Egypt’s enduring influence on the continental and global stages.

Hassan Ghazaly, anthropological researcher and founder of AfroMedia, emphasized that Ambassador Idris’s selection underscores the profound trust placed in Egyptian diplomacy by both African and international bodies. Ghazaly highlighted Egypt’s extensive expertise in crucial areas on the continent’s agenda, viewing the appointment as the culmination of a distinguished diplomatic career and a renewed endorsement of Ambassador Idris’s proven competence in multilateral engagement, particularly concerning peace, security, and development in Africa.

Ghazaly also drew attention to the historic role played by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration in championing African issues internationally. He recalled that during the era of national liberation, Cairo facilitated the travel of African national and revolutionary leaders to New York, enabling them to articulate the aspirations of their peoples under colonial rule. These leaders subsequently became iconic figures of independence and liberation across the Global South.

“This appointment strengthens the empowerment of African competencies within international and regional organizations,” Ghazaly stated, “and propels efforts to enhance cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations toward broader and more impactful horizons.”

The AfroMedia founder further noted that this strategic milestone reinforces the trajectory of joint African action, especially given Cairo’s leading role in strengthening ties between the African Union and the United Nations, as well as its active contributions to peacekeeping and peacebuilding across the continent. He also highlighted the timely nature of this appointment, coinciding with the United Nations’ 80th anniversary, serving as a reminder of Egypt’s foundational role in the UN and its consistent influence since its inception.

Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His distinguished career includes serving as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and as Egypt’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union. He currently serves on the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund’s Independent High-Level Advisory Board, a position to which he was appointed in 2024 by the UN Secretary-General.
