Kwame Tua: The ‘despised’ man who betrayed the Asantes over the Golden Stool

According to his account, during the tenure of Governor Maxwell, the British were actively searching for the Golden Stool, believing it would enhance their wealth and power in the region.
It was during this period that Tua offered to provide information about the stool’s location and those connected to it, ultimately leading to the arrest of Nana Prempeh I, the reigning Asantehene at the time.
“Kwame Tua’s betrayal made him a despised figure among the Asantes. In 1896, under British rule led by Governor Maxwell, Prempeh I was arrested and sent to Elmina. Tua informed the British that he knew where the Golden Stool was hidden.
“They sent Hausa soldiers to search for the stool in Bari, but the then Offinso queen, Nana Afranewaa, got wind of their plans that night and quickly moved the stool to a safer location. Asante soldiers later ambushed and killed the British soldiers,” Anokye explained during an interview on Max TV.
Anokye added that the British believed the stool was made of pure gold and was the ultimate source of the Asantes’ power.
He further explained that as tensions escalated, Yaa Asantewaa rose to lead the war against the British, which eventually led to the arrest and exile of several Asante chiefs.
“Tua helped the British arrest the Asante chiefs, who were later exiled to Seychelles. It is also alleged that Tua committed an abomination by engaging in intimate relationships with the wives of the exiled chiefs,” he claimed.
Anokye also recounted that later, Governor Frederick Hodgson requested to sit on the Golden Stool during his visit.
The Asantes, in response, demanded the release of Prempeh I as a condition, but the infamous Yaa Asantewaa War broke out during the negotiations.
Tua is also alleged to have assisted the British in locating and arresting more Asante chiefs, including Yaa Asantewaa, who were subsequently exiled to Seychelles.
“Kwame Tua not only betrayed his people but also married Prempeh I’s wife after his exile,” Anokye added.
