Passion Air Slashes Domestic Fares by 10% as Cedi Continues to Strengthen

In a significant development for domestic air travel, Passion Air, a leading Ghanaian airline, has announced a 10% reduction in airfare across all its local routes, effective Tuesday, June 17, 2025. This move makes Passion Air the first domestic carrier to directly pass on the benefits of the Ghana cedi’s impressive appreciation against major foreign currencies to its customers.

The airline’s decision comes in direct response to the recent strengthening of the cedi, which has seen remarkable gains in value over the past few weeks. “At PassionAir, we are committed to ensuring our valued customers benefit directly from positive market developments,” the airline stated in a notice issued on June 16, 2025.

Passion Air currently operates flights to key domestic destinations including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, and Wa. This fare adjustment aims to make air travel more accessible and affordable for Ghanaians, aligning with the airline’s commitment to offering competitive fares as the domestic aviation landscape evolves.

The announcement follows a week of weather-related flight disruptions, and Passion Air took the opportunity to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to passenger safety and comfort, assuring travelers that service quality would not be compromised despite the fare reduction.

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, had recently urged domestic airline operators to adjust their fares downwards, citing the cedi’s sustained stability as a strong enough reason for reduced transport costs. He emphasized that similar reductions seen in general transport fares, which dropped by 15% following the cedi’s appreciation, should extend to the aviation and broader services sectors. The Minister also lamented the current lack of competition within Ghana’s domestic airline industry, which he believes contributes to persistently high fares.

Passion Air’s proactive step is expected to put pressure on other domestic airlines to follow suit, potentially ushering in a more competitive pricing environment and making air travel within Ghana more economical for a wider segment of the population.
