Zoomlion Clarifies End of YEA Contract, Denies Government Cancellation Claims

Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited has moved to clarify the status of its contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), asserting that the agreement was not cancelled or terminated by the government, but rather reached its natural conclusion in September 2024. This statement comes in response to recent media reports suggesting otherwise.

In an official release, Zoomlion addressed a letter from the Office of the President dated June 11, 2025. The company explained that its Street Sweeping Program contract, which initially expired in March 2024, had been extended by a further six months, thus naturally concluding in September 2024.

“The contract has therefore reached its natural conclusion and expired. Contrary to claims in some media reports, this expiration does not constitute a termination or cancellation of the agreement by the government, and that is not what the Office of the President stated,” Zoomlion emphasized.

The clarification follows an announcement from the Presidency, prompted by a petition from investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni. The presidential letter indicated that the contract would not be renewed and that future sanitation contracts would be awarded through competitive tendering. Furthermore, the Presidency’s communication detailed plans to improve working conditions for sanitation personnel and to audit all payments made to Zoomlion after the contract’s expiration.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has openly welcomed and applauded the government’s initiatives to enhance procurement processes and accountability. “Zoomlion Ghana Limited fully supports and welcomes this approach,” the company stated, signaling its readiness to adapt to the new procurement landscape.

The company further highlighted that the recently expired YEA contract was itself competitively procured in 2019, demonstrating its existing experience with rigorous bidding processes. “We are well prepared and eager to actively participate in any forthcoming competitive procurement processes,” Zoomlion affirmed, expressing confidence in its ability to compete for future contracts under the new system.

Regarding accountability, Zoomlion also expressed full support for the Presidency’s decision to audit any payments made subsequent to the contract’s expiration. “As a responsible corporate entity, transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money are core to our operations,” citinewsroom.com quoted Zoomlion as stating, reinforcing its commitment to transparent practices.
