Mozambique to require ETA for Visa-Free Travelers from 29 Countries

This new rule, announced by Mozambique’s National Immigration Service, marks a significant shift in travel regulations aimed at tightening border control, enhancing national security, and streamlining the entry process for international visitors.

What Is the Mozambique ETA?

The Mozambique ETA is a mandatory pre-travel registration that must be completed online at least 48 hours before departure. This formality was previously optional, but it has now become a compulsory step for legal entry into Mozambique.

Key Details About the Mozambique ETA:

  • Website: Apply at www.evisa.gov.mz
  • Application Requirements: Passport info, personal data, trip details
  • Approval Time: Usually within minutes
  • Validity: 3 months from the approval date
  • Purpose: Not a visa, but a legal entry notification

Fee on Arrival: What You’ll Pay

Even after getting ETA approval, travellers must pay an administrative fee of 650 Mozambican Meticais (MZN) — about €9 or $10 USD — upon arrival. This can be paid in local currency or in a foreign currency accepted by Mozambican authorities.

Failure to pay this fee or to present an approved ETA may result in denied boarding or refusal of entry at the Mozambican border.

29 Countries Now Subject to Mozambique’s ETA Rule

Since May 1, 2023, citizens of the following 29 countries could travel to Mozambique visa-free for up to 30 days, with an option to extend. As of April 24, 2025, these travellers must now secure an ETA in advance:

  1. Belgium
  2. Canada
  3. China
  4. Côte d’Ivoire
  5. Denmark
  6. Finland
  7. France
  8. Germany
  9. Ghana
  10. Indonesia
  11. Ireland
  12. Israel
  13. Italy
  14. Japan
  15. Netherlands
  16. Norway
  17. Portugal
  18. Russia
  19. Saudi Arabia
  20. Senegal
  21. Singapore
  22. South Korea
  23. Spain
  24. Sweden
  25. Switzerland
  26. Ukraine
  27. United Arab Emirates
  28. United Kingdom
  29. United States

What You Need Upon Arrival in Mozambique

Besides the approved ETA, travellers must show:

For Tourists:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Return flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds

For Business Visitors:

  • Invitation letter from the Mozambican host organisation
  • Return ticket
  • Financial documents showing means to support the stay

Visa-Free Entry Still in Place (with the New ETA)

It’s important to note that since May 1, 2023, tourists and business travellers from these 29 countries have enjoyed visa-free entry into Mozambique for stays of up to 30 days, with a possibility of a 30-day extension once within the country. The introduction of the ETA is a new procedural layer for this existing visa-free arrangement.

Plan Ahead: Avoid Entry Denial

Mozambique’s authorities are firm on this new requirement. No ETA = No Entry. To avoid travel disruptions, be sure to:

  • Apply for your ETA at least 48 hours before flying
  • Double-check that your passport has 6 months’ validity
  • Carry printed or digital copies of the ETA and supporting documents

Final Tips for Travellers

This new policy reflects a growing global trend toward digital pre-screening of travellers. By streamlining the arrival process, Mozambique hopes to make visits safer and more predictable for both tourists and officials.
