‘No Drugs in Zongo Movement’ shuts down 20 suspected drug dens

A major crackdown on drug use and sales has been conducted at Sabon Zongo, a community in Accra.
The “No Drugs in Zongo Movement”, in collaboration with some concerned youth, led the operation, which resulted in the closure of 20 container shops suspected to be drug dens.

Large quantities of illicit substances were seized, including weed, crack, codeine, tramadol, and other opioids, according to a Sika Official video posted on X.
It added that the movement, which was supported by local authorities and the National Chief Imam, set ablaze the ceased drugs in a show of commitment to tackling the issue.
The deputy spokesperson of the “No Drugs in Zongo Movement”, Mohammed Hashiru, emphasised that drug abuse has made a lot of youth drop out of school in the community and that it is getting out of hand.
“Drug abuse is getting out of hand in the community and that is why we rise today to this. Even though we didn’t get enforcement from the police and military, but as long as it’s in our community, we tried our best. The next time we come again with reinforcement, we will arrest anyone involved. This is just the beginning,” he indicated.
The operation highlighted the growing concerns about substance abuse among youth in Ghana and the efforts of community-led initiatives to address the problem.
