Legon SRC, Legon TESCON deny supporting Agyarko’s widow Maa Lydia

The Students Representative Council of the University of Ghana and the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy of the NPP (TESCON) have disowned the widow of late Agyarko, Lydia Seyram Alhassan over their alleged support of her candidature, MyNewsGh.com has learnt.

A bulk SMS sent in the name of the NPP Students wings said Maa Lydia as the widow is called, has been a “pillar of support” for the students wing and were being called upon to vote for her.

Earlier, the SRC President of Legon, Sylvester Amoako claimed the entire student body of the university of Ghana has declared its full support for Madam Lydia Alhassan, as their preferred candidate to occupy the parliamentary seat of the late Emmanuel Agyarko.

According to the president, Madam Lydia Alhassan has a “special connection with the students”. She has over the years “demonstrated that she is a mother for all and a pillar of hope for the students through her consistent support towards student activities- both academic and non-academic- on campus”. Her “kind and selfless nature in ensuring that the welfare of students remains paramount at all times has won the hearts of many students on campus.”

But the parliament of the Legon SRC issued a disclaimer against the President, saying what he said were entirely his personal opinion and not a position of the Students.

TESCON legon has also issued a disclaimer.

 Read full disclaimer below:

Our attention has been drawn to a message claiming to be coming from UG TESCON declaring her support for Madam Lydia Alhassan, but we University of Ghana Tescon want to state categorically without any equivocation, that University of Ghana Tescon has no knowledge about that BULKSMS being sent to delegates.

We want to further state that, University of Ghana Tescon has not declared our support to any of the candidates and that, we will support and work with any of the candidates who emerges as a winner.

The primaries is scheduled to take place this coming Saturday 29th December, 2019 at the Dzorwulu School hence  Tescon will urge all her members to remain calm as we prepare to elect a formidable candidate on Saturday who will represent the constituency in the by election.

We will use this opportunity to wish all aspirants the best in tomorrow’s primaries.

Thank You.
