Abedi Pele, John Mensah, three others – Dede Ayew reveals the 5 people behind his success

From his early days at Marseille to captaining the Black Stars, his journey has been shaped by several key figures who have influenced his personal and professional life.

In an interview with Ligue 1, Ayew shared the five most influential people in his life.

Abedi Pele

The first and most important person in Ayew’s life is his father, the legendary Abedi Pele. A three-time African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele is more than just a father—he is Ayew’s role model and source of inspiration.

“He is my idol, very influential in everything that I do. He has always supported me, always advised me, and made me dream big. He’s my everything.”

Growing up in a footballing family, Ayew was surrounded by the sport, but it was his father’s guidance that nurtured his passion and ambition.

His mother

While Abedi Pele provided footballing wisdom, it was Ayew’s mother who ensured balance and stability in his life.

She played a crucial role in his upbringing, managing both the good and difficult times while prioritizing education and family values.

“She is the queen of the Ayew family. She handles everything—good, bad, and education. We never lacked anything when we were young, so we were very blessed. These two (my parents) are on top of the list.”

Pape Diouf

The late Pape Diouf, former Olympique Marseille president and a close friend of Ayew’s father, played a significant role in shaping his mindset.

Having known Ayew since childhood, Diouf became a mentor, instilling values that extended beyond football.

“He shaped my mindset in a lot of ways. He made me understand what life is about, what football is about. His words were, ‘You are going to succeed. You will make it because that’s how everyone will remember you—not just for football, but for who you are outside the pitch.’”

His aunt, Hala

Ayew also acknowledges the significant influence of his aunt, Hala, who supported him from a young age.

She played a pivotal role in his transition to France, believing in his talent and helping him adjust to life abroad.

“She is my second mother, and she came with me to France when I was moving back. She believed in me from day one. She’s someone I love dearly and is very close to my heart.”

Football mentors and teammates

While Ayew credits individuals for shaping his career, he also recognizes the impact of coaches and senior teammates who guided him along the way.

He highlights the influence of José Anigo and Didier Deschamps, who played crucial roles in his development at Marseille, while also acknowledging how his national team teammates helped him grow.

“Someone like José Anigo was very important to me, and Didier Deschamps as well. And then there were the players who took care of me when I joined the national team—John Mensah, John Paintsil. I am someone who values loyalty a lot, and these people were there for me. They helped shape who I am today.”
