The Member of Parliament of Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has hinted at plans to submit recommendations on the LGBTQ+ Bill to former President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Friday, January 10, 2025, Haruna Iddrisu stated that he has developed ideas concerning the LGBTQ+ Bill, which he intends to share with the president.
Haruna Iddrisu explained that LGBTQ+ issues pose societal challenges for the country, stressing the need for collective efforts to preserve traditional values.
“I have some ideas on LGBTQ+, but I am yet to share them with the president as to how he can re-own the bill, build national consensus around it, and ensure it aligns with existing laws and the constitution.
“There is a way to deal with it, but making a comment here would reduce it to a religious matter. However, it is actually a social problem for our country, and collectively, we should resolve to preserve our values as a people,” he remarked.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill seeks to criminalise activities associated with LGBTQ+ advocacy.
If passed into law, the bill would impose penalties on individuals or entities that promote or fund LGBTQ+ activities, as well as those providing indirect support to them.
It aims to outlaw the advocacy and support of LGBTQ+ rights, criminalise same-sex marriages, and impose penalties on LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies.
While many religious organisations and like-minded individuals have expressed full support for the bill, some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and campaigners oppose it.
They argue that the bill will infringe on the human rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana, subjecting them to persecution and violence.
Others argue that it is necessary to protect Ghanaian cultural and family values, which they believe are being undermined by foreign ideologies.
