BRICS has officially added Nigeria and 12 other nations as partners, not full members.

This announcement was made during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, held from October 22 to 24, 2024.

The 2024 summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Fair Global Development and Security,” marked the sixteenth annual gathering of the organization.

The goal of BRICS is to enhance economic integration with key emerging nations, fostering trade, investment, development, security, and cooperation among leading emerging market economies.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) from the bloc on Thursday read, “BRICS officially adds 13 new nations to the alliance as partner countries (not full members).”

The new partner countries include Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

On Thursday, October 24, 2024, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, confirmed Nigeria as a partner in BRICS to PUNCH.

He said, “Yes. It is true that Nigeria joined BRICS as a partner.”

BRICS, an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, expanded in 2010 to include South Africa, forming BRICS.

In early 2024, the group added Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as full members, all of whom attended this year’s summit as full participants.

Recall that in November 2023, Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar expressed the country’s interest in joining BRICS as a full member within the next two years.
