Day 2 of the demonstration led by the Democracy Hub group has turned violent as police and protestors get physical.
In a video shared by the FixtheCountry group on X, the police were seen forcefully dragging protestors in a bid to take them off the streets.
According to commentary being run in the background, the protestors said they did not deserve the treatment being meted out to them by the police.
They said: “Look at what the Ghana police is doing. We were here demonstrating peacefully, now look at what they are doing. Even those engaging in galamsey are walking about freely.”
Several Democracy Hub protesters have been arrested by the police at the 37 Roundabout. Earlier, the police had warned protesters not to gather at the same location as they did the previous day.
The police have, however, released a statement to explain that the protestors had blocked the road and were causing traffic on the 37 Military Hospital stretch.
According to the statement, the police have managed to keep the situation under control with traffic running smoothly.
Day one of the demonstration on Saturday saw defiant protesters pushing the limits of the Ghana Police Service, who had to be on top of their game to avoid escalation.
Prior to the demonstration, the police announced a special operation, blocking major roads leading to the seat of government, the Jubilee House, which the protesters indicated they wanted to ‘occupy’.
Responding to the police’s prevention of their approach to the Jubilee House, the protesters took retaliatory actions that outraged a section of the public.
