The tragic scene captured the mother of the 18-year-old accused, Godwin, in tears, while the father of the deceased, Edward Borketey Sackey, struggled to hold back his own tears.
The family of the accused, who were expected to have visited the bereaved family much earlier to commiserate with them, have provided an explanation for their delay.
According to them, they only learned about Edward Sackey’s family through the Ghana Police Service during court proceedings, as the O’Reilly school authorities had been tight-lipped about the information.
“The teachers did not communicate with us regarding the identity of the deceased family. We only got to know of their identity in court yesterday and this is very disappointing on the part of the teachers.”
The deceased’s family are however demanding for the head of the accused’s family to be present.
“We believe that every family has a head no matter how it is. There is no family without a head in Ghana because as Africans, we believe that males are the head of every family and there is no way you go to a family and they do not have a male representative no matter what.
“…The women cannot just come and say they are the only people in the family, there is no way its possible. We want the male head of the family to come and talk to us because he is the one who will be able to lead them as a family if anything has to be done,” a family representative told Accra-based GHONE TV.
Both families have since accused the school authorities of negligence in the matter.
Meanwhile, the La District Court has remanded the suspect into police custody for 2 weeks and the case adjourned to September 19, 2024.
