Four individuals, including three Ghanaians and a Chinese national, are currently under investigation for their roles in tampering with and installing manipulated meters from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Wisdom Sewlorm, an agent tasked with the installation of ECG meters, is at the center of the investigation.
His employee, Ernest Afatsawu, allegedly tampered with the meters and sold them to a Chinese plastic manufacturing firm managed by Rulian Shan for GH₵1200.
The firm’s sales manager, Ali Yakubu, was also apprehended, citinewroom.com reports.
The tampered meters, intended for residential use, were installed in a factory producing plastic bowls at Oblogo near Weija.
The ECG has estimated the financial damage caused by the tampering to be over GH₵77,000 between July and August.
Paul Abariga, the Director responsible for Investigation, Prosecution, and Security at ECG, stated that the four individuals will face court proceedings on Wednesday.
He also mentioned that the contract with the ECG contractor involved in the scandal would be terminated.
“There are meters that are being installed in many parts of our operational area, and there have been some investigations reported to this directorate that some of the meters that are being installed were tampered with before they were installed. We undertook investigations, and we’ve come to realize that the intel that we’ve gathered and the reports given to us are certainly true,” Abariga explained.
He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue promptly to prevent further financial losses and ensure the integrity of ECG’s operations.
“By the end of the day, we would have finished with our investigations on them so that we put them before court tomorrow,” he concluded.
