Their rescue took place when floating on debris near the shores of Lake Kivu days after the floods.
One was rescued in a village called Bushushu and the other in Nyamukubi on Monday, May 8, 2023, by residents of the two villages.
Residents describe the survival of the babies as a miracle.
A local community leader Delphin Birimbi told the BBC, “It is a miracle; we were all amazed.”
The parents of the rescued babies have also been declared dead so the community members are looking for people who can raise them according to Delphin Birimbi.
A woman, however, can be heard saying in a video shared on Twitter that one of the babies has a bad leg injury.
The recent DR Congo floods have displaced thousands of citizens.
According to Mr. Birimbi, 5000 citizens who went missing due to the floods are yet to be found.
Local civil society groups also report that 200 injured people are in local health centres and a hospital following the floods, while 1,300 residential houses have been destroyed, and “many schools, health facilities, churches, and water infrastructure were destroyed”.
