Nicholas Gborse of Bishop Herman College adjudged National Best Teacher

A teacher of Bishop Herman College, Kpando in the Volta Region has been adjudged as the National Best Teacher at the 2018 edition of the World Teachers Day.

Nicholas Mawunya Gborse walked away with the award which has been rebranded as the ‘Ghana Teacher Prize’.

He is expected to receive a 3-bedroom apartment and GH¢5000 endowment fund as his prize.

Speaking to Myjoyonline.com after the ceremony, a humbled Mr Gborse expressed his thanks to God for the recognition and prayed that others who are striving in their sectors would be noticed as well.

“…today might be my turn but tomorrow may be their turn,” he said.

Speaking on the process used to select him, Mr Gborse noted that the candidates were taken through rigorous interviews and shortlisting.

“They also went to our schools to interview teachers and students at random to assess the impact of our teaching on them. Besides that they interviewed people in the communities as well to know how we have impacted there,” he narrated.

“The purpose of the award is to raise the standard of teaching to meet international standards so that aspect was considered too,” he said. He added that he is a writer and also does a lot of radio interviews so that contributed to his success.

The History, Government and English master said he will use his endowment fund cash to establish an ICT centre in his home village, Adaklu in the Volta Region where the standard of living of the people is low, which affects education as well.

The centre will be furnished with computers and laptops and personnel to help the students appreciate the teaching of ICT practically.

Closely related to that, he intends to build an online platform where teachers can upload audio-visuals of the lessons for students to access after class

Besides that, Mr Gborse has a passion for promoting girls in technical education and intends to use part of his cash prize to fund same.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, noted that the government is bent on improving the standards of teaching and that has informed the introduction of the licensing of teachers.

Besides that, the government is converting all the Colleges of Education to University Colleges, which will make a Bachelor’s Degree the minimum qualification to be a teacher in the public sector.
